SAFETY TIPS FOR THE FALL SEASON

There is a different feel in the air when Fall arrives! Mornings are crisp, leaves start changing and the birds start making plans to fly south to warmer climates in the winter. The Lake of the Ozarks is beautiful all year long, but especially in the fall.

With all the beauty that the Autumn season offers us, there are things to be aware of and take proper precautions for the safety of you and your family during the changing weather. The Lake West Chamber of Commerce would like to share some safety tips for you to be prepared for the season.

HEATING YOUR HOME

With the cooler weather approaching, it will soon be time to crank your furnace up to take the chill out of your home. Be sure that your furnace is in working order and ready to go. Check and change your filters for the new season and if you aren't particularly handy, call a reliable heating & cooling company to be sure that your unit is serviced and ready for use.

SPACE HEATER PRECAUTION

If you are not quite ready to crank up the furnace to heat your whole home, a space heater provides a great way to heat small areas. Be sure to fully read the instructions that come with the unit and be sure it is in a safe place that is well-vented and not near any flammable items that could present a fire hazard.

FIREPLACE SAFETY

There is nothing cozier than gathering in front of a crackling fire during these chilly months. Make sure that any ashes or debris from last season aren't still lingering, and have your chimney cleaned by a professional. Check that your flue or damper is opening before starting a fire, and use dry, well-aged wood. Crack a window to prevent the room from becoming smoky and use a fire screen to prevent sparks from flying into the room.

SMOKE ALARM

Spring and Fall present the perfect time to change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Creating a reminder to change the batteries when you set your clocks for Daylight Savings Time will make sure you and your family will be alerted to the first sign of danger.

DRIVING TIPS:

Although the falling leaves are beautiful, they can also present a driving hazard as they can obscure your vision, especially during foggy days. Bright sunlight in the Fall can also be a hazard when making your commute to work since sunrise occurs later in the morning, just as your vision can be compromised in the evening with the glare of headlights in the dark. Watch for children getting off the bus in the afternoon, and playing in the leaves in the evening.

TIPS FOR BOATING IN THE FALL

The Lake of the Ozarks is a great destination for Fall boaters as the lake is calm and quiet. Whether you are taking a cruise down the lake to take in the scenery or enjoying an afternoon of fishing, there are precautions to take in case of changes in the weather. Make sure you have appropriate attire such as coats, gloves, and rain gear. Throw some blankets in the boat and make sure you have life jackets for everyone on board. Be sure to have your cell phones fully charged, and let someone know your plans and when you expect to be back from your day on the water.

The Lake West Chamber of Commerce would love for you to come visit us during the fall season to experience for yourself the beauty of the lake with the changing leaves as its glorious background!
