INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT LABOR DAY!

Labor Day is often referred to as the unofficial end to the summer season, but there is a much more important meaning to this holiday weekend!

The Lake West Chamber of Commerce knows the importance of this holiday weekend, and would like to share some interesting facts about how it got its start!

Labor Day has been celebrated on the first Monday in September since it was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century. It became an official federal holiday in 1894. This annual holiday was created to pay tribute to the economic and social achievements of American workers. The holiday founders were looking for a way to unify union workers and a reduction in work time. The average work time in the 1800s was 70 hours per week on average, and the work week was a full seven days!

The first Labor Day was held in New York City when organizers declared a temporary one-day strike. Those workers involved in the strike were to march in a parade, then have a giant picnic afterward complete with food and drink!

One common misconception about the Labor Day Holiday is that all workers get the day off. Not exactly true, as the proclamation from Congress covered only federal employees, and left it up to each individual state to declare their own legal holidays. On Labor Day, most stores and restaurants are open, as well as essential government services in protection and transportation remain active and on duty.

Although the original holiday was meant to address the problem of working too many hours with no time off, today it is more of a confusing holiday with no associated rituals. Family get-togethers, barbeques, sporting events, parades, and more are the events that are celebrated across the United States, and for kids and parents, it means back-to-school season is here!
