TIPS FOR HEADING BACK TO SCHOOL

It's hard to believe that it's that time of year already! August means summer is coming to a close, and kids and parents alike are preparing for the new school season. New schedules and new routines are just a few of the changes that take place this time of year.

The Lake West Chamber of Commerce knows how stressful this can be, so we would like to share with you some tips to get ready to ease into this new schedule and be prepared for the first day of school.

PAPERWORK & REGISTRATION:

Make sure you have all the required documents and paperwork required for your child's school registration. These documents usually include their birth certificate, immunization records, school transcripts or recent report cards, and proof of residency.

ADJUST SLEEPING HABITS:

Being well rested is important for students to stay alert and focused, and to improve their concentration to perform at their best during the school day. Summer is known for late nights and sleeping late in the mornings. A few weeks before the start of school is a good time to break those habits and incorporate a new sleep schedule. Use the 30-minute rule to get them prepared. Start by gradually having them go to bed 30 minutes earlier than usual, and waking them 30 minutes earlier each day. By the time the first day of school is here they should be ready to go!

GET ORGANIZED:

Back to school presents the perfect opportunity to go through closets and clear the clutter. Outsized shoes and clothing can be gathered and donated to a local charity organization. This will make room for new items you will be purchasing for the new school year so your child can easily pull together their outfit of choice to get ready in the morning.

PLAN FOR LUNCH:

Planning lunchtime meals ahead of time can be a fun activity for the family. Creating menus and shopping lists can help you get a step ahead of the game so there are no last-minute decisions while packing for lunch the morning of!

SHOPPING FOR SCHOOL SUPPLIES:

Take the stress out of back-to-school shopping by creating a checklist before you head to the store. Missouri offers a reduced tax weekend specifically designed for back-to-school shopping. This year the sales tax holiday weekend runs from Friday, August 5th through Sunday, August 7th. The Lake West Chamber of Commerce has a list of supplies that your child may need to start the new school year.
