CELEBRATING ST PATRICK’S DAY ON THE WEST SIDE!
St Patrick’s Day is best known for parades, dressing in green attire (Gettin’ Your Irish On), drinking green beverages, and eating Corned Beef & Cabbage – but how did it begin?
As legend has it, the earliest observance of St. Patrick’s Day dates back to the 17th Century as a religious feast day to honor the passing of St. Patrick who is credited with having brought Christianity to Ireland. After being recognized by the Vatican, the day remained a religious event where they started celebrating with a mass in the morning, and a military parade that followed. However, shockingly, they closed the bars on that day!!!
Boston has made the claim that they are responsible for the first American celebration of St Patrick’s Day, however, there is evidence to show that St. Augustine might have been the first to make it an official celebration.
Nonetheless, it has become an American tradition on March 17th every year to become “Irish for a Day” and celebrate in style with all the festivities that come along with this green holiday such as Shamrocks & Leprechauns!!!
Big cities celebrate this day with fanfare parades, bagpipe players, dancing the Irish Jig, and more. Chicago even turns their river a bright green for this event!
The Lake West Chamber of Commerce is proud to keep this age-old tradition going with two celebrations! On Saturday, we will hold our 12th annual St. Pat’s Pub Crawl, along with our 31st annual Saint Patrick’s Boat Parade.
