Interesting Facts about the Lake of the Ozarks
The Lake of the Ozarks has long been known as the perfect place to own a second home in the Midwest. People come from all over the world to enjoy what the lake area has to offer – boating, fishing, shopping, dining, and much more including local entertainment! However, in recent years the lake area has become a permanent home for many who have decided that this is the perfect place to live year-round!
The Lake West Chamber of Commerce has all the information you need to know about the Lake of the Ozarks. In addition to all the activities there are to enjoy, there is a rich history surrounding the creation of this beautiful area.
Most of the labor was completed by hand, though there were some steam-operated and other powered equipment used. More than 20,000 were said to have participated in the project at one time or another. The original purpose of the dam was to supply electricity to surrounding areas.
Upon its completion in 1931, the lake was the biggest man-made lake in the world. It is now second largest with Truman Lake being the biggest. The lake itself has a surface area of 54,000 acres and 1,150 miles of shoreline. The main channel of the lake stretches 92 miles, and at its deepest point is 130 ft.
At mile marker 31 in Linn Creek Cove, believe it or not, is an underwater ghost town! Old Linn Creek was supposedly the only town to be covered by water when they damned the Osage River ... the town was originally founded in 1841.
The Lake of the Ozarks is nicknamed "The Magic Dragon" because of its serpentine shape.
Caves are plentiful in the lake area! There are four “Show Caves” throughout the lake area that have been developed for tourists and spelunkers alike. These caves offer lighted walkways, handrails, and bridges to navigate through these amazing underground areas created by nature.
Lake of the Ozarks is home to a beautiful state park that is the largest in the state. It’s estimated that there are over 2.5 million visitors per year. The park itself has 85 miles of shoreline with two public beaches and boat launching areas. It is also home to Lee C. Fine Memorial Airport. There are also several hiking trails, and picnic areas for family and friends to enjoy.
Ha Ha Tonka Park
There are 12 hiking trails (16 miles total), a three-story castle and one of Missouri's largest springs located in this beautiful park. The spring feeds an average of 48 million gallons of water a day into the Niangua Arm of the Lake. This is a must-see destination!
