15 Fun Facts about Lake of the Ozarks!

Fun Facts about Lake of the Ozarks


1. The Lake of the Ozarks has won Best Recreational Lake in the Country! In fact, our lake beat California's Big Bear Lake and Iowa's West Okoboji Lake.

2. The entire Lake measured end to end is 92 miles. 

3. The Lake of the Ozarks has more shoreline than the entire state of California - 1,100 miles to be exact.

4. Bagnell Dam, the dam that makes the Lake of the Ozarks what it is, was built during the Great Depression, from 1929 to 1931. 

5. When construction of the Lake was complete, it became the largest man-made lake in America. 

6. Building the Lake of the Ozarks cost about 30 million dollars. Today that would translate to $360 million.

7. The Lake sits next to the biggest state park in Missouri at 17,741 acres - Lake of the Ozarks State Park. 

8. The Lake of the Ozarks area is home to approximately 900 camping grounds. 

9. During the season (considered to be between Memorial Day and Labor Day), roughly 3.5 million tourists visit the Lake of the Ozarks to enjoy the beauty and summer fun. 

10. Major holiday weekends can bring around 10,000 boats to the Lake of the Ozarks. 

11. There are approximately 617 billion gallons of water filling the Lake of the Ozarks.

12. If all of the floodgates are open at Bagnell Dam, over 1.2 million gallons of water can pass through in just one second. 

13. There are over 70,000 homes along the Lake of the Ozarks. 

14. The Lake of the Ozarks is a very popular destination for second homeowners. Out of all the people in Missouri who own second homes, 40% of them own a property at the Lake of the Ozarks. 

15. The Lake of the Ozarks has a nickname - The Magic Dragon! This comes from its serpentine, dragon-like shape.
