Today we're talking about the traditions and history of St. Patrick's Day and how you can celebrate this year at the Lake of the Ozarks. Read on to learn more!

History of St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick - the patron saint of Ireland - was a real person born in the fourth century. When he was just 16, he was kidnapped and taken as a slave to Ireland. He escaped, but then came back to try and convert the Irish people to the Christian faith. He established many monasteries, churches, and schools during his life until he passed away on March 17th, 461. Legend has it that he used the beloved Irish national plant - the shamrock - to explain the trinity. In Ireland, his life is honored on the day of his death with religious services and feasts.

St. Patrick's Day Traditions

Over time, St. Patrick's Day has become a more secular holiday celebrated with parades, green attire, traditional Irish food, and drinking. Read below to learn more about the most popular symbols of the holiday!

Shamrock

The shamrock has been a sacred plant in Ireland that symbolizes Irish national pride and the rebirth of spring. It's fitting, then, that St. Patrick's Day is just two days before the first official day of the spring season.

Corned Beef and Cabbage

Many centuries past, it was actually bacon and cabbage that was the traditional Irish meal. However, corned beef was substituted by Irish immigrants in New York to help save money.

Leprechaun

The ancient Celtics believed in fairies and told tales of cranky leprechauns that mended the shoes of other fairies and used tricks to protect their treasure.

Celebrate the Holiday!

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated worldwide with large parades and themed parties and events. In fact, Chicago dyes its river green every year to celebrate the day. Here at the Lake, there are several great events to take part in to celebrate the great St. Patrick.
